There is only SO MUCH a teacher can do within the limitations set by the state and federal levels. We KNOW half the time we arnt doing what we’ve been professionally trained to do. And it’s NOT our fault. We’re time constricted and scripted and standardized. This is only increasing with time. It becomes nearly IMPOSSIBLE to give every student what they need to be successful. And it isn’t because of us. Yet we take it out on ourselves. What if it’s NOT just on us to meet all learning styles within one confined space within one confined set of skills and content? What if it’s NOT possible to accommodate all learners and characters and personalities and dispositions and hobbies and talents and natural inclinations in a classroom setting? What if we aren’t looking in the right direction for educational reforms? Where is the opportunity for every student to excel with their God-given abilities and callings? Do we want a large percentage of kids to have to wait until they are “free” of the boundaries of standard schooling to succeed? Or are we setting everyone up for failure? As teachers, we take on so much that isn’t truly possible with the illusion that it is. We fight nature and get blamed when things don’t go as planned. The kids feel stupid, not worthy, not good enough, as they are judged on very specific things that don’t come natural to everyone. The parents experience the stress of getting their kid to find some sort of community and sense of belonging. The mornings spent begging their anxious and depressed kids to get to school are too many to count. And in the meantime these parents are overworked, anxious and depressed themselves with hardly any time to breathe. We work harder and add more but we all know it isn’t the true answer. The type of reforms we know we need are too big and scary for our time. But it’s hard to teach in that setting every day when you can visualize what could be. #teaching #educational
