My previous job had discretionary unlimited PTO but they would basically shame you into never using it. I took less time off there than anywhere else.

I take my PTO and fully remove myself from work. If me being off for a week causes problems, that means the company allowed a single point of failure

the only person that me taking pto hurts is me. it absolutely counteracts any relaxing I do on vacation. I still take ALL of my pto tho. every hour

check your laws and contract where you are. some companies/regions have to pay out unused pto at year end if they don't rollover
