For the first time ever, at 34, I finally have my very own bookshelves! 🥳 They're not just any shelves, though. They were a gift from my amazing Panda (Bruce) and let me tell you, it means the world to me. 🐼🖤 You see, I've spent a littler over the past year slowly building my collection of physical books, ones that have lived in my Kindle app for the past 12 years. It's been a journey rediscovering the joy of holding a book in my hands and turning its pages. And now, at 34 years old, I have my first bookshelf to display these literary gems proudly. But here's the thing – Panda has no idea just how much this means to me. These bookshelves are not just shelves, they're a healing balm for the younger Des within my heart, deeper than we won't have to trip over boxes in the pantry anymore! 😂 Once I finished setting everything up, Bruce mentioned that he wants to get me more bookshelves, and I couldn't be more thrilled. You see, being surrounded by books brings me to life. Bruce has observed this about me, and it's absolutely true. These books have been my comfort blanket, my best friend, my confidant, and my lifeline throughout the years. Through unaliving attempts, loss of loved ones, divorce, miscarriages and everything in between. The good too. To some, it may just be a shelf, but to me, it's everything. You see, I've never really felt "at home" anywhere I've ever lived. I don't put up many pictures or collect art on the walls – maybe it's because of my past experiences with abandonment and trauma. I've always needed to be ready to go at a moment's notice. My whole wardrobe still resides in my two old Army tough boxes 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️. While I can spend money on others without hesitation, spending on myself often ends with guilt and tears and something I literally avoid. These books, are my little gifts to myself. But now, even though this isn't our forever home, I have a small wall that's mine. It's filled with my most prized possessions – my books (outside of my kiddos). It's a place where I can find solace, inspiration, and a sense of belonging. A spot to plan and write out future stories, a spot to just be, me. So here's to the power of books and the love that Panda showered upon me with these bookshelves. I'm eternally grateful for this gesture, and I can't wait to continue filling these shelves with more stories, adventures, and cherished memories little by little 🫶🏽.
