I think what you saw as “chill” behavior might actually be a mix of fear and social pressure. In many Eastern European cultures, appearances matter a lot, especially in public, so parents are often very concerned with how their kids are perceived. That doesn’t necessarily mean the relationship is healthy. Discipline can be really strict, just not always in front of others. I grew up around a large Romanian community, and this kind of authoritarian dynamic between parents and kids was pretty common. Of course, not every family is like that, and things have been changing over the years, but it’s important to recognize that obedience doesn’t always equal emotional well-being.

When kids feel safe to express themselve even if that means occasionally being loud, emotional, or defianlyntey’re learning how to communicate, set boundaries, and process feelings in a healthy way. It might look messy in the moment, but it often leads to stronger relationships, higher emotional intelligence, and better long-term confidence. as a Romanian who grew up in the US, this is why I didn't pursue and Romanian guys, to my parents disapproval, because they were raise to equate love with control.
