@allison.jacobsss: Does my body look familiar to you? Does it look like your body or someone you know? It’s called #Lipedema! As my first lipedema surgery approaches, I am taking every minute to feel gratitude for everything my body has allowed me to experience. I spent most of my life starving my body, purging my body, loathing my body! This body—fibrotic, swollen and lipedema filled, is sooo resilient! But as the pain and the disease progresses (from my legs, to my arms, and most recently to my torso), I know that surgery is what my body needs in order to preserve my mobility and quality of life. My first surgery is scheduled for Dec 18 and then 2 more to go in Jan and Feb. I will be in compression for months and will need manual lymphatic drainage massages for 6 weeks after each procedure. This is NOT a cosmetic surgery. It is MEDICALLY NECESSARY! It’s a lot of emotions, and I hope that sharing my journey with you continues to spread awareness about this disease! Lipedema almost exclusively affects women…1 in 10 women to be more specific. Unfortunately so many medical providers have not heard of Lipedema even though it was identified by the @Mayo Clinic in 1945! We need to keep talking about this chronic progressive disease. Far too many are suffering and resorting to disordered eating (and full fledged EDs) because they are constantly told to move more and eat less. Lipedema diseased fat does not respond to diet and exercise. If your doctor hasn’t heard of Lipedema, don’t give up. Keep advocating for yourself! Find a specialist!
