@danielkoabeaty: I came very close to being born in prison, and it's a part of my life story that I'm not afraid to share. It's the source of inspiration for my poems because I want to be open and honest about my journey. I was that confused little black boy who grew up without a father, and I had to learn how to navigate life as a black man in America without any male influence to guide me. It was a journey filled with a wide range of emotions, and I experienced many long days of depression. But as I continued to grow and learn, I came to realize that my father was actually my hero. I began to appreciate him for the role he played in my life, even though he wasn't physically present. I've become a strong and resilient man, and our once damaged relationship has healed over time. I've learned that the support of your parents, your tribe, and your community is incredibly important. Even when circumstances aren't ideal, it's easy to choose anger and blame, but I encourage you to choose a different path – one of gratitude.
