’90s Kids’ Movies Weren’t for the Faint of Heart: A Look Back at Antz Kids' movies in the '90s had an edge that modern films often shy away from. One prime example is the 1998 DreamWorks film Antz. Rated as suitable for children aged 8 and up, the movie blended a coming-of-age story with surprisingly dark humor, adult themes, and even some intense action sequences. I was 8 years old when Antz hit theaters, and while I enjoyed it at the time, I now realize that much of the humor and themes flew right over my head. Looking back, it’s astonishing to see how daring DreamWorks was with the film’s content, from its sarcastic wit to its commentary on societal structures. In today’s landscape, it’s hard to imagine a major animation studio pushing the boundaries in quite the same way for a younger audience. The '90s truly were a different era—one where kids’ movies didn’t pull punches and trusted their audiences to handle a little edge.
