Motor restlessness can range from mild to severe. The boy in this video spends most of the day and night lying like this. He kicks his legs forcefully and flails his arms. It’s not a concern in itself, as he is happy and developing normally - faster than average, in fact. However, it can be uncomfortable for him because it disrupts his sleep and makes it difficult for him to calm down for play and sleep. Children with motor restlessness have a greater need for sensory stimulation to help regulate themselves. When motor agitation becomes pronounced, it is often due to one or more of the following: 1. The child has a high motor drive due to elevated muscle tone, resulting in a strong need for movement (muscle activation). 2. The child is a “soft/floppy child” and has difficulty sensing their own body boundaries due to low sensory input from the muscle-joint sense. 3. The child’s nervous system is stressed (maybe due to trauma, prematurity, illness, etc.). Children with motor restlessness need sensory stimulation - not just for the muscle-joint sense, but for all three primary senses - to fully or partially meet their heightened sensory needs. If it doesn’t bother your baby, you may not need to take any action at all. Many babies naturally grow out of it as they develop motor skills and stimulate their senses through daily movement.
