At 85 years old, Navi Pillay has just been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Her life is a masterclass in what one woman can build when she refuses to accept the limits placed on her. She was born in 1940 in Durban, South Africa, to a family of Tamil descent, during a time when the system was designed to keep women like her out of the rooms where decisions were made. She went to law school anyway. She didn't wait for someone to give her a place. She created her own. She became the first woman in her province to open her own law firm, and she used it to defend people who were fighting for freedom and equality. Then she kept breaking barriers. She became the first woman of color to serve on South Africa's High Court. She was appointed to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she later served as president, helping bring justice after one of the darkest chapters in modern history. She served as a judge of the International Criminal Court. And from 2008 to 2014, she served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, defending human dignity around the world. The Nobel committee highlighted one of her most important legacies: under her work in Rwanda, an international court recognized that rape and sexual violence can be crimes against humanity and acts of genocide. Before that, sexual violence in war was too often treated as an unfortunate side effect of conflict. Because of her, it is prosecuted as a crime against humanity. Protecting women has been at the heart of her work for decades. She co-founded Equality Now, an international organization that fights for the rights of women and girls. In South Africa, she was part of the Women's National Coalition, which helped secure the equality clause in the country's constitution, protecting people from discrimination based on gender. She has also supported organizations helping survivors of domestic violence. As a judge in Rwanda, she said,

She has also supported organizations helping survivors of domestic violence. As a judge in Rwanda, she said, "From time immemorial, rape has been regarded as spoils of war." She spent her career making sure it would be seen as a crime. In 2003, she received the first Gruber Prize for Women's Rights.Women around the world are protected today by laws she helped shape. Her story reminds me that the doors we walk through today were opened by women who were told no and kept going anyway. Congratulations, Judge Pillay. Thank you for a lifetime of courage, and for proving that a woman's voice can change the law of the world. 🤍 #NaviPillay #NobelPeacePrize #WomenEmpowerment #WomenInLeadership
