Whitley Update: Good updates are always easier to share. The hard ones — the ones where things don’t go the way you hope — those take a little longer, because you find yourself waiting and hoping for one more sign of progress before you say it out loud. Yesterday was one of those days. We worked with Whitley until 11 o’clock last night, trying to get him to eat. He’d been doing better, little by little, but yesterday just wasn’t what we were hoping for. His appetite was gone, and while we did get his medications in and kept a close eye on his breathing, it wasn’t the progress we’d been holding onto. The truth is, Whitley is a crippled pig. He’s likely around 10 years old and has spent his entire life with little to no positive human interaction. And trust, for an animal like him, is everything. If we can’t earn his trust, we can’t give him the quality of life we so desperately want for him. He has to let us help him. He has to believe that the people around him now aren’t here to hurt him, but to help him heal. We move slow. We listen to his cues. When he gets stressed, we back off. When he needs space, we give it. And then we come back — with treats, soft voices, and gentle hands. Because that’s what it takes. And we’ll do it as long as it takes. It’s 104° today, and Whitley’s resting in a cool, air-conditioned room. But it’s a lonely life when you can’t move, when you don’t trust the world around you. We know we could do incredible things for him, if he’ll let us. And we’re not giving up. Here at Ziggy’s, we tell people all the time — you don’t have to walk to have a good life. You have to trust. You have to let us build a world for you where you can thrive, no matter what your circumstances are. And we’ve done that for 94 other animals here. We want so badly to do it for Whitley too. Please keep him in your prayers. He’s such a special soul, and we love him more than words can say. ❤️
