@cleoabram: These controversial robots are picking fruit. They do it by using sensors and 3D cameras to tell if a piece of fruit is ripe based on weight and color settings, then use an arm with a suction cup to carefully pluck the fruit off the tree and bring it over to a cart. Automating agricultural jobs is a topic that impacts hundreds of thousands of workers just in the US alone - and there are ongoing conversations about the need to improve labor laws for the humans here. Until recently, fruit picking has required the kind of precision and decision-making people are better at than robots. Now? It’s less clear. If these robots work well, one optimistic case is they could assist picking when conditions are worse for people, and join other automated equipment already in use alongside humans. Nick Jaloma :
This has solar punk potential, but until capitalists don’t control the workforce they cannot be implemented.

Yeah. See, I’m not optimistic though. Doing my masters thesis essential on how pessimistic I am about the job market with AI and robots.

If that robot is as slow as it looks, it can’t come close to the speed of a human doing the same job. So what is it for?

So many farms have problems finding seasonal workers so this seems like a good idea.

I know it’s scary but I don’t think AI is going to take over our jobs. If no one works, no one pays tax, people can’t buy the fruit this machine was

I love stuff like this but I do worry about if the government will keep up. UBI would solve so many problems and we'd probably innovate faster too

In the UK a bunch of produce rots bc there's no one to pick it since Brexit. They had to give out special seasonal visas.

At a minimum the robots could be used to
measure their ripeness and then help assign workers to the best places to work.
