A widely shared image is often claimed to show soldiers forming the shape of a horse's head to honor the millions of horses, donkeys, and mules that died during World War I. While the sacrifice of those animals was very real, the story behind this particular photograph is not. The image was actually taken in January 1919 at Camp Cody, New Mexico, by photographer Almeron Newman. It shows 650 officers and enlisted men of Auxiliary Remount Depot No. 326 arranged in a "living photograph" representing "The Devil," the favorite saddle horse of their commanding officer, Major Frank G. Brewer. Although the photo was not created as a memorial to all war animals, it has become closely associated with their legacy because of its striking appearance. The historical reality remains just as powerful: millions of horses, donkeys, and mules served during World War I, transporting supplies, pulling artillery, carrying the wounded, and supporting armies under extremely dangerous conditions. Countless animals never returned. Sometimes, the true history behind a viral image is different from the story shared online—but no less meaningful. Had you heard the real story behind this photograph before? 📍Via: U.S. Army historical archives / Library of Congress #History #wwi #facts #photography #svnm
