The Brutal Truth About English Proficiency Among Malaysians (Part 1) I was curious to know how ChatGPT would produce an outline for English Language Training. Within seconds, I received the outline and the speed of processing my prompt was superb. However, when I went through the outline, I wondered if it was even suitable for the Malaysian environment. The outline states the following main topics: Workplace Communication, Business Writing, Presentation Skills, Interpersonal Communication, Grammar and Vocabulary, Soft Skills Integration, etc. The outline looks impressive but does it take into account the needs of the non-native speakers of English in a non-English speaking environment? The outline is definitely not suitable for non-native speakers of English in a non-English speaking environment. Any trainer or training provider who relies solely on this kind of outline produced by ChatGPT is adopting a very simplistic view about the real standard of English among most Malaysians today. It is a very simplistic view since most Malaysians have received their formal schooling in vernacular schools which use Malay, Chinese and Tamil as the medium of instruction in primary and secondary schools. As most Malaysians have used their respective mother-tongues to learn the various subjects during their formal schooling, it is IMPOSSIBLE for them to make the smooth transition to participate in a training programme which covers the main topics listed above.  Most ordinary Malaysians who used their respective mother-tongues (Malay, Chinese and Tamil) during their formal schooling in Malaysian public schools struggle to write a Simple Sentence in Standard English clearly, correctly and confidently. These same Malaysians struggle to speak in Standard English clearly, correctly and confidently at their workplaces. When these same Malaysians attend training programmes that include the main topics listed above, they are at a loss as they try to understand the head, the body and the tail of the subject-matter. In addition, most of these Malaysians are very shy to open their mouths to speak English during the training let alone participate fully in the training programme. As such, they need to be motivated constantly so that they can participate fully in the training. #EnglishTraining #grammar #CorporateTraining #WorkplaceEnglish #English
