One little known fact is that the role of the Genie was written specifically for Robin Williams. In fact, they were so determined to have him that they ignored Williams' resistance towards playing the character. Instead, to convince him, they animated a reel of his stand-up with him delivering the lines as the Genie. The resulting test, where Williams' stand-up about schizophrenia was translated into Genie growing another head to argue with himself, made Williams "laugh his ass off" and convinced him to sign on for the role. Williams' appearance in Aladdin also marks the beginning of a transition in animation to use celebrity voice actors rather than specifically trained voice actors in animated films.
