Feeding Time!! Up Close Bed Bug feeding! What you’re watching here is real, live bed bug feeding behavior—captured in real time. At the beginning of the video, I’m holding a vial with two live bed bugs inside. You can clearly see my arm, but what’s important is what happens when I lay that vial flat. Bed bugs don’t rely on vision the way we do. While humans operate off five primary senses, bed bugs are equipped with specialized detection systems that allow them to locate a host with precision. They can sense body heat… and even more importantly, carbon dioxide. The moment I position the vial, they immediately detect both the heat from my skin and the carbon dioxide being released—and that’s their signal that a host is present. Within seconds, they emerge and begin feeding. Now watch closely—one of them actually stops feeding, moves slightly, and then starts again… multiple times. This behavior is commonly referred to as “breakfast, lunch, and dinner.” Instead of feeding in a single location, they probe multiple spots along the skin. That’s why people who do react to bites often notice marks in a line or small cluster. But here’s where things get misleading… Only about 30% of people have a visible reaction to bed bug bites. The majority of people may not react at all. And even if you do react, it can take up to 3 to 4 weeks for those bite marks to appear. So when someone asks, “What bit me?”—the reality is, it’s nearly impossible for a doctor to determine that just by looking at the skin. Now, as they feed, you’ll notice something else happening… Their bodies begin to swell, and their exoskeleton takes on a shiny, almost stretched appearance. That’s because their outer layer—called the cuticle—is expanding as it fills with blood. As it stretches, it changes how light reflects off of it, giving that glossy look. But feeding isn’t just about survival—it’s essential for their development. Bed bugs go through five immature stages, called instars, before reaching adulthood. After hatching from an egg, a bed bug must take a blood meal in order to molt to the next stage. It will shed its exoskeleton after each feeding—five times—before becoming a fully developed adult. No blood meal… no growth. And once they reach adulthood, things escalate quickly. After mating, a female bed bug is essentially pregnant for life. That means every time she feeds, she has the ability to produce eggs—continuing the cycle over and over again. So what you’re seeing here isn’t just feeding… It’s a critical part of a much larger biological system—one that allows infestations to grow rapidly and often go unnoticed.
