@lauralovesteaching: Replying to @kittynn goddess I had trouble spelling #Wednesday my entire life. It wasn’t until I was an adult in my 40s that I learned it had any connection to a pagan God. Wednesday has an interesting backstory. Old Norse mythology’s chief god was called ODIN and the Germanic tribes, like the angles and Saxons, called him Woden. But Woden/Odin is similar to the Greek Hermes and the Roman Mercury. When I did digging into the #etymology of Wednesday on #OED it’s fascinating to see all the various spellings that it went through the past thousand or so years. It seems we’re not alone in thinking Wednesday is difficult to ##spell Etymological #kn#knowledge important as #te#teacherscause we are prone to have students memorize words and if we don’t understand the reason for their spellings we might say things like oh, English is just weird…We just have to memorize it. I know that is true to some degree but knowing the backstory makes the word come alive. Let’s make #Sp#Spellingnthralling and understandable rather than a list to be memorized.
