Unlucky Rob. Nothing wrong with splitting green wood. I find it easier to split when it’s green and as a bonus it’ll dry out faster.

Fit a new handle, not the hard a job. Overstrikes will break most axes as there not designed to take that force to the handle!

Apparently the fresh wood has an excessive sap, so you have to cut pieces to length let them dry out if not the sap could set chimney on fire
