Artūras Adolfovich Sakalauskas (Артурас Адольфович Сакалаускас)(c. 1967) was a Lithuanian conscript serving in the Soviet Ministry of Internal Affairs' Internal Troops who carried out a mass shooting aboard a prison-escort train in the Soviet Union on 23 February 1987. After months of alleged dedovshchina (hazing) and abuse by fellow servicemen, which reportedly culminated in an attempted sexual assault on the train, Sakalauskas took 2 Makarov pistols from an unsecured weapons locker, loaded them in the toilet, and opened fire on the guard detail and civilian train conductor. After exhausting the initial ammunition, he returned to the guard commander's compartment, took 3 additional Makarov pistols, and resumed firing. He fired 46 shots, of which 33 struck targets and 18 were fatal, killing 7 fellow servicemen and the civilian conductor. He then covered the bodies with mattresses, changed into the guard commander's uniform, took the commander's briefcase and the 5 pistols, and burned his own uniform in the carriage's furnace. Sakalauskas was ultimately not convicted. After prolonged psychiatric examinations, a later assessment concluded that he suffered from a chronic mental illness and was legally irresponsible. A 1990 court proceeding resulted in compulsory psychiatric treatment rather than a criminal sentence.
