Amanda Hemphill was murdered on November 20, 1987. That day, Amanda had gone outside to play with friends. When she didn't return by evening, her mother reported her missing. Rescue workers searched through the night and into the morning for Amanda. Finally, they found her body lying face down in eight inches of snow-frosted water on the north bank of a creek near her home. Police would not initially say how Amanda died, except that they found multiple injuries on her body. However, they soon told Amanda's family that she had been strangled, and that they were investigating it as a homicide. There was no evidence of sexual contact or assault. Within two days, a 14-year-old boy named Frederick Marine was charged with killing Amanda. He was officially charged with second-degree murder and sent to Stevenson Home juvenile detention center without bail. Police either would not, or could not specify a motive for the killing. When a funeral was held for Amanda, her classmates kept returning to her open casket to leave mementos. One drawing of a little girl surrounded by sunshine was left next to Amanda's hand. Scrawled on it in a child's handwriting was:

Two days later, Marine was formally rearrested and charged with first-degree murder. The upgraded charge meant that he would be tried as an adult. His bail was revoked and he was sent back to the detention center. On December 8, 1987, Marine was indicted by a grand jury on first-degree murder charges for beating and strangling Amanda to death. When Marine went to trial, the details of his conversations with police came to light. He told police that he was arguing with Amanda over who had the right to play at the creek behind his home. In a taped confession, he first said Amanda died after being hit by a 41-pound grate he was placing across the creek. In his final confession, he said he pushed Amanda into a tree, backhanded her, and lifted her from the ground by the neck until her feet stopped moving. On February 21, 1989, Marine was found guilty of second-degree murder. The jury decided that Amanda's murder was not intentional, but done recklessly and manifesting a cruel, wicked and depraved indifference to human life. When the verdict was read after five hours of deliberation, Amanda's mother, Pamela Bowers, trembled; Marine's mother fainted between court benches. On April 21, 1989, Marine was sentenced to a mandatory life term, with parole eligibility after 11 years. After the sentencing, Marine's mother left the courthouse in tears without commenting. Marine's stepfather stated, "I just hope in all this grandstanding they don't forget that there's a little boy in all of this." Four years later in 1993, the Supreme Court ruled that Marine should have been tried as a juvenile, and freed him. Eight months after being released, Marine was charged with molesting a 7-year-old boy. He pleaded guilty to a charge of third-degree unlawful sexual conduct and was sentenced to two years. At the end of January 1998, Marine was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl and sentenced to a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of 37 years in prison.
