I used to leave classroom observations with three pages of notes, and somehow still not know what mattered. Later, I would open them to write my report and find arrows, half-finished sentences, and details I could no longer place (even if I wrote them on my laptop!) I’d reread the same section.Try to remember what happened right before it. Wonder whether I had focused too much on the moments that stood out, and missed the quieter strengths, supports, and ways the student was communicating. Meanwhile, the cursor was still blinking on an empty report and I felt myself losing precious time. That was the part I wanted to change. I wanted to sit down after an observation and not have to do the entire observation over again in my head.I wanted to open my notes and already be able to see: ☑️ What supported the student’s participation. ☑️When their engagement shifted. ☑️How they communicated and connected. ☑️What changed across tasks or environments. ☑️And what the team could actually do with that information. Because classroom observations give us something our standardized assessments can’t: The opportunity to understand a student within the environment where they are actually learning. Now, I’m not staring at scattered notes, trying to decide which detail belongs in the report or how to begin the first sentence. The observation is already organized around the areas I wanted to consider, and the reflection prompts help me move from what I saw to thoughtful, neuroaffirming documentation (All while saving time too, which we all need more of!) So when you open your notes later, you’re not trying to reconstruct 30 minutes of a student’s day from a page of frantic shorthand. You know what mattered most and where to begin. Comment OBSERVE and I’ll send you the classroom observation tools I use everyday and let me know in the comments, what do you notice, maybe that others might miss, during an observation? . . #schoolpsych #schoolpsychologist #schoolpsychology #schoolsocialworker #specialed observation IEP behavior
