I bought a mesh gate. Then hooked up one side to the wall and the other to the wall. That way I can get the door open without them trying to escape

I built a catio cat enclosure around my apartment front door for this reason. But you can also put a gate in the hallway to give a few feet for them to stay behind when you open the door 🚪
