@russian.folklore: Kasli casting is a Russian folk craft made of cast iron that originated from the city of Kasli in the Chelyabinsk region in 1747, when when the Tula merchant Yakov Korobkov purchased 250 thousand desyatins of land for 500 rubles and founded the Kaslinsky iron and iron smelter Southern Urals. The site was chosen to be rich in cast iron and unique quality molding sand, as well as wood for coal production. When the factory was taken over by the Demidovs in 1751, Kaslin cast iron products were already widely known in Europe and Asia. The next owner of the plant was a free merchant of the First Guild Lev Rastorguev, who paid 700 thousand rubles for the plant in 1809. After Rastorguev's death, the factories were inherited by his two daughters, who attracted the father-in-law of one of them, the famous manager G. F. Zotov, to direct the management. It was he who, following a trip to Germany, organized in 1824, on the basis of ordinary iron foundry production, also casting complex molds into dry sand molds. Candlesticks, plates, and garden sofas were produced. But for highly artistic casting, there were not enough modelers and sculptors. Since the 1850s, new talented sculptors, painters, coiners and molders have been attracted to the production. Thus, graduates of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts M. D. Kanaev N. R. Bach, who later organized an art school at the plant, were invited to Kasli. For a long time, the standard of Kaslin casting was the sculptures of P. K. Klodt, provided by the passionate collector V. G. Druzhinin (who became a co-owner of the factories through marriage), who bought the rights to replicate the models. The 1860's-1890's was the heyday of the Kasli cast iron art casting. During this period, the Kaslinsky Foundry received the Small Gold Medal of the Free Economic Society in 1860; the plant participated in exhibitions in St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Paris, London and other cities around the world. Noteworthy is the All-Russian exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod (1896), where Kaslin masters first presented their goods in an openwork cast-iron pavilion.
