Umani Springs has always been a place of miracles, but right now, perhaps the greatest of them yet is unfolding. Our matriarch Murera has become a mum, which is an almost unimaginable event given her story! When just a calf, Murera trod on poisoned spikes set by poachers, maimed by this device she subsequently dislocated her hip! When Murera arrived into our care at the Nursery, many feared the worst, but she had a fight in her eyes and so long as we knew she wanted to live, we provided all the support we could. Years later Murera needed to begin the next stage of her journey, so we built Umani Springs for her and her friend Sonje, so they would have a more gentle environment from which to step into the wild. It is our absolute privilege to introduce you to Mwana, the very first baby born to our Umani family. She is happy, healthy, & utterly adored. Murera is a doting mother, supported by her equally smitten nannies and Keepers. We are bursting with pride to see our matriarch — an elephant who has overcome heartbreak and debilitating harm at human hands — embarking on this new chapter of motherhood. Thank you to all our foster parents & donors for making Murera’s miracle possible. Your support allowed us to move mountains to save her, heal her, and create a place where she could thrive.
