The Science of ADHD Affection: ADHD love rarely follows the traditional neurotypical script. The Science of ADHD Affection: ADHD love rarely follows the traditional neurotypical script. It can look loud, scattered, and chaotic from the outside, but it is driven by a nervous system that loves fiercely and observes everything. The Working Memory Glitch (Interrupting): To a neurotypical brain, interrupting feels disrespectful. But to an ADHD brain, it is enthusiastic engagement. Their short-term working memory is incredibly faulty. If they don't blurt the thought out immediately, the mental "sticky note" gets wiped clean. They aren't talking over you to dismiss you; they are desperately trying to share their excitement before the file corrupts. Time Blindness & The Texting Paradox: Disappearing for three days and returning with a dozen memes is a clash between Time Blindness and Executive Dysfunction. They probably drafted the reply in their head and felt the relief of sending it, but the physical motor step got lost. You never left their internal monologue they just finally secured the dopamine required to actually hit send. Interoception vs. Hyper-Focus: How can they forget to drink water for six hours but instantly notice when you need a snack? ADHD brains often struggle with Interoception the ability to register internal bodily signals like hunger. However, because their brain is hyper-focused on you (a primary source of dopamine and safety), their external observation skills are dialed up to 300 percent. The Body Doubling Anchor: Needing you in the room while they do completely separate things is a biological hack called Body Doubling. Your physical presence acts as an anchor. It co-regulates their nervous system, providing a gentle, passive stream of dopamine that finally makes their chaotic brain feel quiet enough to function. The Reality: You aren't "too much" and you aren't terrible at showing love. Your affection is just filtered through an unmedicated nervous system. If an ADHD brain has connected everything in their day back to you, you are their safest place.
