🚨 New study just published in JAMA by Barnard M et al. looks at endometriosis and ovarian cancer risk! Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining (endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. It can grow in organs such as ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, rectum, the intestine and pelvis (and rarely in other organs like the lungs). It affects approximately 11% of reproductive aged women (and up to 50% of women with infertility and 5-60% of women and teenage girls with pelvic pain). Endometriosis has been associated with ovarian cancer and this study looked at the associations of endometriosis subtypes with incidence of ovarian cancer. ⏭️ What did they find? ⭐️ Ovarian cancer risk was about four times higher among women with endometriosis compared with women without endometriosis. Women who had ovarian endometriomas and/or deep infiltrating endometriosis (compared to those without endometriosis) had a 9.7 fold higher risk. ⭐️ There was a greater risk for Type 1 ovarian cancers (endometrioid, clear cell, mucinous and low grade serous) (7.48 times more likely compared to those without endometriosis) compared with Type II (high grade serous) ovarian cancers (2.7 times more likely compared to those without endometriosis). High grade serous cancer is the most common type of ovarian cancer. ⭐️ Deep infiltrating endometriosis is invasion of at least 5mm into the tissue. Ovarian endometrioma is a mass in the ovary that arises from endometrial tissue within the ovary. **These numbers sound scary but keep in mind that this is relative risk and the actual risk is much much lower. For example— 225/78476 (0.28%) ovarian cancer cases in women with endometriosis versus 372/372,430 (0.1%) ovarian cancer cases in women without endometriosis (and then if breaks down among the subtypes). Like any study, this one has limitations but I think it does inform of the higher risk of ovarian cancer with #endometriosis and is important for patients to be aware of especially as there is no standard screening for ovarian cancer. Let me know your questions about this study or #ovariancancer in general!
