Brachycephaly: A flat spot in the center of the back of the head happens because the baby prefers to sleep with their head in the middle. This occurs due to the recommendation to lay babies on their backs. If the head doesn’t naturally turn from side to side, the ability to rotate decreases over time, making it harder for the baby to turn their head. This also challenges tummy time. To address brachycephaly, it’s essential to strengthen rotation through the entire body. Plagiocephaly: A flat spot on one side of the head also results from back sleeping, where the baby then prefers to turn their head to one side. Sometimes, it’s due to birth-related tension or because the baby happens to look more in one direction. When dealing with plagiocephaly, it’s important to assess how severe it is, ranking it as grade 1, 2, or 3 preferred side (grade 1 = only sensory difference, grade 2 = sensory and strength difference, grade 3 = sensory, strength difference, and limited mobility). Based on this, an exercise plan can be created to balance the difference between sides. Proper positioning is also key to reduce the damage while strengthening and releasing the muscles over time. Scaphocephaly: Some babies are born with a longer head shape, which can be a normal variation. But some have this due to being born prematurely, with a soft skull resting on the sides for months. While the head won’t become perfectly round, you can work on it if desired. Very few babies have craniosynostosis, where the skull is inflexible and grows only forward and backward, not sideways. This is diagnosed through ultrasound and, in severe cases, may require surgery. I’ve created two video-based programs to address flat head, offering the best exercises to help round out the head. Use them alone or as a supplement to manual therapy. Go to link in bio to find the two programs: “Back Arching and Flat Head” “Preferred Side” What’s your baby’s flat head story?🤍 With love, Maria ♥️ #flathead #plagiocephaly #brachycephaly
