@middleeastmatters: Today marks 100 days since the residents of Suwayda in southern Syria started a popular uprising against the current regime. In August, protests started over rising fuel prices and worsening living conditions but soon turned into a call for the downfall of Syrian Dictator Bashar Al-Assad. Crowds have been using chants such as “Long live Syria, and down with Bashar al-Assad, echoing those of the 2011 pro-democracy uprising. Protesters have been demanding for: 👉 Fall of the Assad regime 👉 Implementation of UN Resolution 2254 for political change 👉 Release of over 100,000 political prisoners 👉 End of corruption and the regime’s drug trafficking 👉 Freedom and dignity Suwayda, home to the country's Druze minority population, is a government-controlled city, and open criticism of the Assad regime has been rare in areas under his control.
