The biggest single hit: methylisothiazolinone, a preservative the EU pulled from leave-on cosmetics back in 2015 after allergy rates climbed — yet it's still cleared for rinse-off products like this Head & Shoulders bottle. Here's why: shampoo is mostly water, so it needs a preservative to stop bacteria growing in the bottle. When parabens fell out of favor, brands switched to isothiazolinones — the same biocide chemistry used to keep paints and industrial water tanks from going off. Add "parfum," which can legally hide a blend of undisclosed allergens under one word, and that's where most of the points went. The problem is methylisothiazolinone is one of the most common causes of scalp and skin allergy, and the sensitivity builds quietly with repeated contact. On a scalp that's already flaking and irritated, washing with it several times a week can be part of the problem, not the fix.
