Hasan Zîrek (1921–1972) was one of the most influential and prolific Kurdish singers and composers. He was born in the village of Hermêle near Bukan, in present-day Iran. His surname, “Zîrek,” means “diligent” in Kurdish, a tribute to his father’s hardworking nature. At the age of 11, Zîrek lost his father, which forced him to work from a young age to support his family. Despite financial hardships, his musical talent was recognized early. He had a powerful and emotional voice that resonated deeply with listeners. Throughout his career, Zîrek composed and performed around 1,500 songs. Although primarily a Kurdish singer, he also performed in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Azerbaijani. In 1953, he moved to Iraqi Kurdistan, where he gained popularity by performing on Baghdad Radio. His fame continued to grow, but in 1958, he was deported back to Iran, where he continued his musical career, recording many of his famous songs at Kermanshah Radio. Despite his success, Zîrek faced ongoing financial struggles. He passed away in 1972 at the age of 51 due to cancer and was buried in his hometown of Bukan.
