Depressive Suicidal Black Metal, usually abbreviated as DSBM, is one of the darkest and most emotionally intense branches of black metal. It developed from the colder and more atmospheric side of traditional black metal, combining distorted guitars, repetitive riffs, raw production, harsh screams, slow passages, and an atmosphere of isolation. The genre is strongly focused on negative emotions, loneliness, alienation, despair, inner conflict, and the darker sides of human experience. Although the name contains the word “suicidal,” the music should not be understood simply as encouragement of self-destruction. For many musicians and listeners, DSBM is a way of expressing difficult emotions through art and turning personal experiences into music. A major characteristic of DSBM is its atmosphere. Unlike some forms of metal that are built mainly around aggression or technical performance, DSBM often tries to create a particular emotional environment. Guitar parts can be repetitive and hypnotic, drums may become deliberately simple, and vocals are often performed as distant screams or cries rather than conventional singing. Production is frequently raw, giving the music an uncomfortable and personal feeling. The result can sound almost like a musical representation of isolation or emotional exhaustion. The international DSBM scene includes many different approaches. Some bands concentrate on atmospheric black metal, while others combine DSBM with depressive rock, post-black metal, shoegaze, ambient music, or punk influences. Because of this, DSBM is not one single sound. Two bands can both be described as DSBM while sounding completely different. Georgia has produced a surprisingly recognizable name in this scene: Psychonaut 4. Formed in Tbilisi in 2010, the band became one of the best-known Georgian extreme metal groups internationally. Their music is commonly described as depressive black metal, depressive suicidal black metal, and depressive rock. Psychonaut 4 are especially interesting because their music is connected to Georgian and post-Soviet experiences rather than simply copying the Scandinavian black metal tradition. The band has described its themes through ideas such as urban negativity, personal problems, depression, addiction, and the struggle with one's darker side. In an interview, the group explained that their music was intended as a form of psychological expression and communication rather than an invitation for listeners to destroy themselves. The band's early material is strongly connected to DSBM. Their first demo, 40%, was released in 2011, followed by their first full-length album, Have a Nice Trip, in 2012. The latter is explicitly tagged as DSBM, depressive black metal, depressive rock, and related styles. Their later releases expanded their sound, moving into post-black metal, atmospheric black metal, and other forms of extreme and alternative music. One of the most interesting parts of Psychonaut 4 is their use of languages. Their discography contains Georgian, Russian, and English material, while their later work makes particularly strong use of Georgian language and musical identity. This gives their music a different character from much of the international DSBM scene. #dsbm #psychonaut4 #blackmetal #decalius #depressive
