@dr_sihan_waghid_derm: ⏩What are milia? Milia are small, harmless cysts that often manifest as white bumps on the skin. ⏩What causes milia? Causes include: Slow skin cell turnover: Cellular turnover is a natural process of shedding dead skin cells and replacing them with new, healthy cells every 28-40 days. As we age, this process slows down, resulting in dead skin cells getting 'trapped' in small pockets beneath the skin, causing milia, in individuals who are susceptible. Other factors such as sun exposure, stress, and hormones can also influence this skin cycle. Excessive application of occlusives: Skin slugging refers to the application of petroleum jelly to specific areas of the face to lock in moisture and prevent dehydration. However, in excess, it can create a barrier on the skin, trapping dead skin cells and leading to the development of milia. Injuries to the skin, such as burns, blistering, or prolonged sun exposure, can further contribute to the formation of milia. ⏩Prevention and treatment Gentle exfoliation with retinol, retinoid, and/or AHAs can help prevent them or consult your dermatologist to have them removed through extraction or electrodesiccation. #milia #Miliatreatment #dermatologist
