@packleaderdogs: If you have a dog who is pulling on leash, there are 3 main reasons why this is likely happening. 1) Your dog doesn't understand the concept of following on leash on the walk. If this is the case, spending time in a yard or open field to practice leash work with exercises like long line work is a great way to teach the concept of following and what to do with pressure on the leash. 2) Your dog is too pent up with energy. That seems to be the case with Julianne, who asked this question. She has been practicing with her dog, who does well in her yard, but as soon as she goes out for the walk, her dog starts pulling. It's likely that we need to drain that dogs energy PRIOR to going for the walk so it makes sense to the dog to follow. Remember, it's exercise, structure, and affection in that order. Body, mind, heart. If the dog has pent up energy, we need to exercise the body before teaching structure. Example: I just rescued a red zone pittie from a shelter in Brooklyn, NY. About to be put down and 7 months in the shelter. When he arrived, he was so pent up with energy that I did a little long line work just to teach the concept of pressure on the leash and then took him for a LONG bike ride. We're talking miles and speeds up to 18 mph. Talk about pent-up energy. No matter what leash, tools, or techniques I used, without draining that pent-up energy, his instincts would be telling him to do whatever it takes to release that pent-up energy, making it impossible for him to learn the concept of walking calm on a leash. 3) The human is not practicing leadership. If the human is not behaving as the present parent figure in the relationship, the dog may understand the concept of following on the walk. However, if they don't view their human as a leader, it won't make sense to them instinctually to follow a human they see as a follower. I will make more content on leash walking because I know how many people are struggling with the walk, and I want to make sure everyone has the knowledge how to achieve a great walk!
