1⃣ social media
i didn’t think much of it, but tiktok, instagram, x or snapchat gave my brain instant highs with zero effort. over time, it trained me to crave fast action and quick rewards.
when i brought that brain to the charts, i wanted the same thing: quick results, big moves, instant feedback. so i’d enter early, oversize, and chase trades. there’s also the physical part no one talks about. endless scrolling trains your fingers to constantly move. to swipe, tap, refresh. so when i sat in front of the charts, my hands wanted to do something - aka randomly click and enter trades.
the moment i did a full social media detox was the first time in 2.5 years of trading that i actually had discipline at the charts and that my fingers stopped clicking - i could just sit there and wait for my setup. 2⃣ constant background noise.
i always had something playing. either music, podcasts or youtube. it felt productive, but it kept my brain in constant consume mode. one stimulation on top of the next.
i’d switch songs, jump between videos, never finish listening to anything because the next option looked more interesting. i was always chasing something new.
taking this to the charts, i expected the same thing - a new move, a new setup every couple of minutes. I pretended trades were like songs that I could just switch between. once i removed all background noise before and during my trading sessions, my focus improved massively and waiting for setups became much easier. 3⃣ constant phone checking.
i used to pick up my phone a ridiculous amount of times per hour. to randomly check messages, notifications or emails between candles. every check was a tiny dopamine hit that trained my brain to expect stimulation every few seconds. so when price did nothing, my body panicked and i’d force trades just to get a relief.
now i put my phone out of reach while trading. i still catch myself wanting to grab it sometimes, but because it’s not there, i don’t fall into the dopamine trap. be honest… how many of these are you doing, and did you ever connect them to your trading? #tradingforbeginners #howtotrade #tradingjourney #daytrading #tradingpsychology
