This condition affects over 5% of the global population, ranking third in causes of death in the United States. The pathophysiology involves chronic inflammation, leading to the breakdown of alveolar walls, resulting in permanent enlargement of airspaces and airflow limitation. Symptoms include dyspnea, a "smoker's cough," and physical findings such as a barrel-shaped chest. Diagnosis involves pulmonary function testing and imaging. Chronic management includes bronchodilators, vaccinations, and smoking cessation. Surgical interventions, such as lung volume reduction surgery, may be necessary in cases of severe dyspnea or complications. Prevention revolves around smoking avoidance. An interprofessional approach involving primary care providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pulmonologists is crucial for optimal patient outcomes. .
