@1kevinmu: Founded in 1891 as a private social club by a group of prominent New Yorkers including J. P. Morgan, who served as its first president, the Metropolitan Club was meant to challenge the hegemony of the older Union Club after a number of Morgan's friends had been denied admission to the Union Club. Original members included Cornelius Vanderbilt II, James A. Roosevelt and William C. Whitney. The clubhouse, completed in 1893 by McKim, Mead & White with an addition by Ogden Codman Jr. completed in 1912, sits on land acquired from the Duchess of Marlborough and remains one of the grandest clubhouses in New York.
