@missclairebenjamin: 🚨 Handling needing to cry 👇 🧠 We live in a society where crying is viewed as a sign of weakness or wrong somehow. Any strong emotions are a sign that something we really care about is being impacted. Being upset is not wrong- it is healthy to experience a full spectrum of emotions. Crying is also healthy and allows us to process emotions and re find equilibrium. It’s why we often feel a sense of relief after crying. 💡 In a work environment we may want take space from an interaction when we experience strong emotions and need to cry. You don’t need to apologise for feeling upset. ▶️ These are the 3 steps I would recommend: 1️⃣ Pause and let the person know you need a moment and take a deep breath. This gives you a moment to regulate your emotions. 2️⃣ Name how you’re feeling and let the person know you need time to process things and then would like to speak more. For example “This has come as a bit of a shock and I’m feeling quite upset. I need to take a break to process this and then it would be good to talk about this further” 3️⃣ Go to a quiet place and allow yourself to cry and process you’re emotions. Then return to the conversation when you feel ready. 🔥 Being able to name how we’re feeling, regulate our emotions and take space when needed is emotional intelligence. You’ve got this 💪 #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #communicationskills #corporatelife #emotionalintelligence #managingpeople #difficultconversations #confidence #professionaldevelopment

This is super helpful!! I love encouraging people to know it’s okay to cry in tough situations (I know, I have MANY times as a leader).

My boss closed the door and screamed at me and when I started crying said I was being manipulative. I was terrified. I was a registered nurse 😳
