@gautama_buddha_shakyamuni Cause and Effect in Theravada Buddhism - 07 According to Buddhist teaching, there are thirty one planes of existence where a living being can be reborn. They are the eleven planes of sensuous existence (kama loka), sixteen planes of fine material existence (rupa loka) and the four planes of immaterial existence (arupa loka). The eleven planes of sensuous existence consist of four planes of deprivation (apaya), plane of human existence (manussa loka) and the six planes of sensual heavenly beings (deva loka). The sixteen planes of fine material existence are the Brahma worlds where rebirth takes place when one has developed one of the first four deep absorption states (rupa Jhana) through concentration meditation (samatha bhavana). Rebirth in one of the four immaterial planes takes place by attaining one of the four immaterial states of deep absorption (arupa Jhana) through concentration meditation. While the development of fine material mental absorptions and formless mental absorptions cause rebirth in the fine material and formless Brahma worlds respectively, it is the quality of one’s bodily, verbal and mental actions that will cause rebirth in the eleven sensuous worlds. Unwholesome or unskillful actions based on the three unwholesome roots of greed (lobha), hatred (dosa) and delusion (moha) will cause rebirth in one of the four planes of suffering (apaya). Wholesome or skillful actions based on the three wholesome roots of generosity (alobha), loving kindness (adosa) and wisdom (amoha) will result in rebirth in either the human world or the six sensual heavens.
