Definitely use usb reinstaller. Completely wipe the drive. Select the hitachi or higher level and journaled part it. Then try again.

Catalina will run on it. Go to dosdude website someone posted. Pretty quick install if you put an ssd in it.

you need a USB installer the old versions like that don't work the certificates expired.

Yeah, reinstalling an older Mac OS through Internet recovery fails. I have a 128GB usb partitioned out full of old Mac OS installers for this reason.

try and test with a ssd installed and see if it will boot after you install so you can identify if it's the hardware or software related issues
