Everyone thinks Data Engineering is: ➡️ Write some SQL ➡️ Build a pipeline ➡️ Create a dashboard ➡️ Done. Reality? A VP asks for a metric. The PM defines it one way. The analyst defines it another way. The data scientist has a third version. The stakeholder remembers a fourth version from last quarter. And somehow you’re expected to build the “single source of truth” from all of them. 😅 A typical Data Engineering project looks like: 📌 Define metrics 📌 Redefine metrics 📌 Discover missing data 📌 Build pipelines 📌 Find data quality issues 📌 Reprocess 6 months of history 📌 Change the metric again 📌 Explain why the dashboard changed 📌 Fix a production issue on Friday at 5 PM 📌 Repeat forever Writing SQL is probably 10% of the job. The other 90% is communication, ambiguity, trade-offs, trust, data quality, stakeholder management, and keeping the business aligned on what a metric actually means. Every senior Data Engineer eventually becomes: 🕵️ Detective 🤝 Diplomat 🧯 Firefighter 📊 Data Therapist And to everyone saying AI will replace Data Engineers: Good luck, AI.
