@saltylocs: Did you know that spiny lobster molts as a key part of their growth process? 🦐✨ . . . . . . . 🔄 Molting is a natural phenomenon where lobsters shed their old exoskeleton to make way for a larger, more spacious shell. During molting, the lobster softens its shell, making it easier to slip out of. They then pump water into their body and stretch out their skin like a water balloon helping to expand their body size. Slowly hormones are released, and the skin begins to harden. This vulnerable phase leaves them exposed to predators.🦞🚨 They molt about 25 times in their first 5 to 7 years of life, and once per year when they’re older. 🪧Fun fact: It takes them about 2 years to grow to the 3-inch carapace (shell) which is the legal-harvesting size regulated in Florida. #saltylocs #saltylocsadventures #CaribbeanSpinyLobster #FloridaSpinyLobster #spinylobsterseason #spinylobster #scubadiving #divingtok #scubatok #spearfishing #chasingtail
