Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Tuesday continued to pour cold water on the yet-to-be-released bipartisan border security bill that’s being finalized in the Senate, saying it is “not enough” to secure the southern border. Congressional Republicans, who have largely soured on providing more aid to Ukraine, insisted late last year that any additional funding to the country be tied to sweeping changes to the U.S.–Mexico border, spurring the bipartisan Senate talks to try to secure a compromise bill. Since then, hardline conservatives in both the House and Senate, encouraged by former President Trump, have grown increasingly opposed to the bipartisan bill. Speaker Johnson acknowledged “it’s hard to make a judgement” on the bill because the text hasn’t been released but said from what he’s heard about it so far, it wouldn’t pass muster in his conference. “I hope some of this is not true, but from what we’ve seen, clearly, what’s been suggested is in this bill is not enough to secure the border,” he told reporters. “We have a responsibility, a duty to the American people that the border catastrophe is ended. And just trying to whitewash that or do something for political purposes, as it appears it may be, is a non-starter in the House.” Speaker Johnson also bristled at a question on whether former President Trump was pressuring him to kill the bill so that Republicans can run on the border issue in the November elections. “That’s absurd,” he replied. “We have a responsibility here to do our duty. Our duty is to do right by the American people, to protect the people.” #speakerofthehouse #mikejohnson #bordersecurity #immigration #usmexicoborder #cspan
