They are so effective – and at times controversial – due to their immediacy and impact. "The aftermath is what really got me ... bodies all up and down the street," said witness Zion Parsons after a truck attack wrought carnage in New Orleans during New Year’s celebrations in the busy French Quarter. Terror struck at about 3.15am, as a man driving a pickup truck that bore the flag of the Islamic state (Isis) group drove into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street – killing at least 15 and injuring 30. The attacker, identified as 42-year-old Shimsud-Din Jabbar of Houston, Texas, then got out of the vehicle and exchanged gun fire with several police officers – injuring two officers – before they shot and killed him. US president Joe Biden, described the attack as “despicable,” and said Jabbar had posted videos online hours before “indicating that he was inspired by Isis.” The FBI said it was investigating the attack early on Wednesday as a terrorist act and does not believe the driver acted alone. At least two improvised explosive devices were planted nearby but did not detonate, according to law enforcement sources.
