Just realized ive went over all other symbolisms except the main one, birds. There have been multiple reoccurrences of birds in aot, symbolizing freedom. But not only the term freedom itself but the longing for freedom the individual desires when birds are looked upon. From feeling entrapped behind walls and eventually being able to go beyond, to viewing the ocean as another wall. The world around them was just another cage. Birds being presented from both conflicting sides, ep 1 when eren awakens from the tree , 2 birds are shown flying and s4 ep 1 when falco awakens and puts his hand out to a bird. The world surrounding them is another wall, but one that cant be broken free of. War will always exist, violence will always exist and hatred will always exist. “flaming water , frozen earth, the one who sees them will be the freest in the world” . Only birds have been capable of seeing whats beyond. True freedom is never attainable. I also want to preface the times we are shown dead birds, which only reoccur twice. Once when eren and mikasa walk into their home and behind carla are 2 dead and another when mikasa father is holding one. **manga spoilers** dead birds can symbolize good and bad luck, a ending and new beginning, renewal and transformation. During the scene when mikasa father comes out w the dead bird mikasa says the line “this world is cruel”.
