Capra neagră, often known as the Carpathian chamois, is a master of its high-altitude environment. These agile creatures can leap with ease from rock to rock, making them the undisputed rulers of Romania’s steepest and most treacherous terrain. Typically shy, they prefer to keep their distance from humans, but in Piatra Craiului, where the population is thriving, it’s not uncommon to encounter one at close range. Standing about 70 centimeters tall at the shoulder, their sleek, dark coats and curved horns are perfectly suited for blending into the rocky landscape. If you’re lucky enough to have such an encounter, it’s an experience that stays with you—a brief moment where the wild and the human worlds collide.
