A change to NSPCC safeguarding guidance has sparked criticism after the charity removed a long-standing recommendation about adults supervising children in changing rooms. The previous guidance said adults supervising children while they changed should be the same gender as them. But that sentence no longer appears in the NSPCC’s latest briefing on changing-room safeguarding. The change could mean schools are no longer being advised by the charity to ensure male staff supervise boys and female staff supervise girls in places such as swimming pools and sports centres. The NSPCC initially said its update reflected changes to Department for Education guidance. But the DfE disputed that explanation, saying it had not removed such a recommendation. The NSPCC later said its decision was based on a “variety of sources.” Critics quickly challenged the move. Conservative equalities spokesman Joy Morrissey called it “completely unacceptable,” arguing that children should have S*x-based supervision while changing. Maya Forstater, chief executive of Sex Matters, also accused the charity of abandoning what she described as common-sense safeguarding. She claimed the decision was influenced by concerns about transgender activists. The NSPCC strongly denied that. A spokesman said it was “categorically untrue” that the update had been made because of external lobbying. The charity also said it may reconsider the guidance when further direction becomes available from the Equality and Human Rights Commission. For now, the dispute has left campaigners asking whether the previous same-gender supervision recommendation should be restored.
