My mother told me years ago. If you wouldn’t use it to wash your face, don’t use it to clean dishes or the kitchen counter and table. I always follow

I soak mine in bleach water twice a week

every week or so I put the spong in a container with hot soapy want with a splash of bleach to disinfect it and other items like scrub brushes.

I’m not a fan of sponges but my parents and in law end up bring me sponges. I prefer my OXO brush with soap dispenser.
