I went to John C. Fremont High School in Los Angeles and graduated in 1981. This was me in 10th grade in my drill team uniform. Drill team was SO much fun, and it was one of the ways I met a lot of people at Fremont. Fremont had quite a history, especially when it came to music. Reggie Andrews taught music there from 1974 to 1978 and had serious connections in the music industry. He brought professional musicians to the school, including Syreeta Wright, Gary Bartz and Gerald Wilson. Deniece Williams performed one of her earliest concerts there. I also remember people talking about Earth, Wind & Fire having performed at Fremont. Jesse Jackson came to Fremont too. I remember his visit. Fremont was one of the Los Angeles high schools involved in his PUSH-EXCEL program during that period. Dr. Dre also attended Fremont. Long before my time, members of The Penguins, the group that recorded the 1954 classic “Earth Angel,” met while attending Fremont. The school also produced quite a list of athletes, including NFL No. 1 draft pick Ricky Bell and major-league baseball players Eric Davis, Chet Lemon, Willie Crawford and Bob Watson. But my favorite part of Fremont wasn’t anybody famous. It was the people I met there. A group of 6 girls and I became best friends, and we sat on the same bench every day during nutrition and lunch. Everybody knew that was our bench, and nobody else sat there. We eventually started calling ourselves the Bench Crew. Almost 50 years later, 4 of us are still best friends. #JohnCFremontHighSchool #LosAngelesHistory #BlackLosAngeles #HighSchoolMemories #ClassOf1981
