@cbcnews: International students say a new rule requiring future foreign students to have more than $20,000 on hand in order to study in Canada will be a burden on young people and their families. “How can anyone build a career with so much pressure in mind?” said Wrushi Thakur, an international student who studies social work at Sheridan College’s Davis Campus in Brampton Ont. Starting next year, prospective students will need to show they have access to $20,635 instead of the $10,000 requirement that has been in place for two decades, on top of paying for travel, tuition and housing. The federal government says it’s needed as the cost of living has gone up in Canada. Immigration Minister Marc Miller also threatened to cap visas in provinces that don't help house students or who won't shut down educational institutions that he argues shouldn't be operating, comparing some to “the diploma equivalent of puppy mills.” #InternationalStudent #Canada #Money

The income proof they need to show is required for them to survive without aid in Canada in this economy. That’s it.

All students are starting in debt, not just international students. Non- international students can’t even succeed.

The requirement of 20k is so that they have the funds to survive here! It’s not to discourage them

It’s not about benefiting students, it’s about keeping them out of a dire situation. If they cannot afford to study without working

The additional financial requirement is very reasonable considering the cost of living - that amount doesn’t go far here.
