What haunts you most? Maybe it’s the way Bran Castle looms above the valley, a citadel forever shackled to legends it never fully claimed. Here, Romania’s autumn air turns sharper, tasting faintly of pine resin and old stone, as Halloween paints the fortress in a palette of theatrical dread. Bran is many things to many travelers, a gateway to Transylvanian myth, a fortress that once guarded a medieval trade route, but it’s also something quieter, sterner, more human than the postcards would have you believe. Look past the carnival of capes and fanged masquerades and you’ll find a place with centuries of bruises and victories. Built in the 14th century, Bran was less a vampire’s den and more a sentinel watching over merchants passing through the Rucăr Bran Corridor. Vlad Țepeș, despite the world’s obsession, barely stepped through its halls; the real shadows here belong to Queen Marie, who reshaped the fortress into a royal refuge of light and warmth. And yet, as dusk thickens, the castle still murmurs with folk superstitions: restless strigoi, whispered incantations, and the age-old Romanian custom of guarding thresholds on nights when the veil thins. So what is Bran, truly, a mythic stage set or a fortress wearing stories like borrowed skins? Maybe the truth lies somewhere in the creaking staircases, in the way history and imagination tangle until you can’t separate one from the other. What do you believe Bran really holds within its walls? And which version of its story do you carry with you?
