Let's go over what a wet specimen/ fluid preservation/chemical preservation is and what it's for. Chemically preserved specimens started as early as the 1600s specifically for medical research. They made their way into personal collections, and pet memorialization. I NEVER get alive animals, or animals that are injured etc. These animals we receive are received ethically only AFTER they have passed from natural causes. My specimens vary in sourcing but for the sake of examples, we get donations from sanctuaries, mammal and reptile breeders, vets, spay aborts, roadkill (when they are pregnant or showing obvious signs of pregnancy, and from other people in the same industry who have no room for the specimen, an excess of a particular specimen, etc. Fluid preservation is a way to fully chemically preserve a specimen (there are both animal and human specimens!) to prevent rot, and fully preserve a specimen from the inside out. We inject and preserve specimens with formalin, essentially permanently

We inject and preserve specimens with formalin, essentially permanently "embalming" the specimen. Injection happens after the specimen has been thawed, going into all major organs, arteries, including brain, tongue etc and into the skin. After the specimen is preserved this way, it is then kept in the form it was posed in for life. We transfer from a formalin storage solution to 70% iso or ethanol for permanent storage, after leaching. By no means are any animals EVER harmed in order to make a specimen. Our buyers are people who simply want pet memorials, preservation commissions, and people who simply love animals so much that they appreciate and enjoy them and their company after death. Finding the beauty in appreciation of life after death is a sentiment shared by many. This is one form of preservation, but there are many. I ask that you be respectful of everyone and their decisions. I respect that this isn't for everyone, but can attest my specimens always go to collectors, vets who love medical anomalies, grieving pet parents and people who have a deep love for the art of preservation. While my job is definitely very difficult, especially because I come from a vet tech/rescue background- I love my job and love being able to respectfully and lovingly preserve these babies in a sleeping form. I promise you, it is a difficult (lots of real tears have been shed) but rewarding and love filled career. I love the animals I preserve, and I love that I'm able to bring joy, comfort and memorialization to people who want their pets or animals preserved in this way. Fluid preservation has been around for hundreds of years- as early as 1644! I love animals, and would never harm or hurt an animal for any reason, let alone for the art of preservation.
